The Original Mission Drive -In Theater

The beloved Mission Drive-In Theater was located on Roosevelt Avenue and opened in 1948. It went dark in 2006. It was reimagined as the Mission Marquee Plaza by the City of San Antonio after purchasing and redeveloping the site. The main marquee and screen are still in use but it could no longer accommodate vehicles. Drive-Ins, once an American staple were fading away and, with the closure of The Mission, San Antonio did not have any drive-ins left.

Return of The Mission

The Covid-19 pandemic changed everything. Drive-Ins became one of the few ways to attend a movie in a safe socially distanced manner. Fred Reyes, the former Rey Feo (and part time cinephile), and the team at Electric Fiesta ( the producers that brought you The EDM Drive In ) have resurrected the southside icon. The New Mission Outdoor Theater at Brooks brings back the drive in movie theater experience. Located on the former Brooks Air Force Base, The New Mission is just a couple of miles from the original.

“The Mission is not just a place, it is part of the fabric of the Southside. I remember going to the drive in as a child. It was a big deal. It was something we would look forward to. I feel that our community needs The Mission now more than ever in light of the pandemic. We need something to look forward to.” - Fred Reyes
